We love kids! Some general dentists choose not to treat children but they make up our favorite group of patients. We enjoy watching our young patients grow and mature. Many people feel that only a pedodontist can treat children. In reality, most children do not need a specialist. Kids need a safe, nurturing environment, the kind we strive to provide. Each child develops at their own pace, with starts and stops, strengths and weaknesses. We pitch our approach to each child’s situation, on their level, not down to them.
A lot has changed in this field but one concept has survived: a child needs to feel they have a “dental home”. We strive to provide a positve, non-stressful experience for your child. We don’t use drugs or Nitrous oxide (gas) to accomplish our treatment. We’d rather take the extra time to allow the child to get comfortable here so he/she can deal with dental treatment, not emerge from a drug-induced haze after every visit.
According to the ADA, the Amer. Assoc. of Pediatric Dentists, the Academy of general Dentistry and others, a child’s first visit should be before their first birthday. At that time, we review the medical history, discuss proper home care, the importance of the caregivers’ dental health, and perform a brief exam.
After any visit, we review the appointment with the parent, when present (teens often come on their own), and answer any questions at that time. Parents of younger children are encouraged to come into the treatment room until the child is comfortable by themselves. We encourage this independence, but allow the child to determine their own comfort level.
